Having problems with your Bose Companion III Computer Speakers ?

015 Hi, I have an iMac and I just recently installed the Companion 3 speakers. I checked every cable, double-checked with the manual to see if I did anything wrong... But everytime I try to plug the speakers in, nothing happens; as in, the sound works fine without them but when I plug them in the sound just dies. I am not using any cables that didn't come with the speakers. Please help!It should also be noted that I plugged the system into the Headphone slot. I wondered if this was the problem but I see no other slots for speakers or sound-related hardware.015

How do I get my mac to recognize my companion 5 speaker control disc for volume control. In the preference pane for sound it sees the Bose system for output but the message under the pane indicates the device (Bose speakers) have no output control and is only allowing me to control the sound with the slide bar on the tool bar at the top of the computer. The speakers seem to be muted by default - you'll see that the LED is yellow/amber. Tap the control pod - the LED will turn green and speakers will work. I felt like such an idiot after I spent almost an hour trying to figure this out. (This feature should be more prominent in the manual.)

Bose Companion 20 Drivers

Install
Use the cd that came with the speaker system to install the drivers. If it didn't come with an install disc then check the Bose website to see if they have driver downloads for this system.

The way in which you connect your speakers to a computer depends on the type of computer you are using, and on your operating system.

IMPORTANT: Do not unplug any cables during this setup procedure.

  • After plugging in the USB cable, wait for a series of 'Found New Hardware' messages to appear on your computer screen (this takes about 30 seconds)
Note: If you do not see these messages, the capability to display them may be disabled on computer. Wait two minutes before proceeding to the next step.
  • In the Windows XP Control Panel, open 'Sounds and Audio Devices Properties'
  • Under the 'Volume' tab, verify that 'Bose USB Audio' is the connected USB device
  • Under 'Speaker settings,' click the 'Advanced' button to open 'Advanced Audio Properties'
  • In the 'Speaker setup' drop list, select '5.1 surround sound speakers'
  • Click 'Apply' and then 'OK.' Your Companion 5 multimedia speaker system is now ready to use

Note: If you remove the USB connection to your Companion 5 system and plug it in again later, perform this procedure again to check the settings.
